Another Call for Blitzwekend

February 1st, 2008

There’s an article by Heri from MontrealTechWatch about the upcoming BlitzWeekend. I’m biased when I say it will be very cool and exciting as I am part of the committee. I invite you guys to read the post and to act ASAP as the number of teams is limited. There will be a lot of great people and more surprises are coming. Experts will be on site, food and plenty of Guru drinks will be provided to keep you rolling. We’re treating you just like Google employees. We just don’t handle the laundry :)

There will be a “5 à 7″ coming soon. So if you want to know more about the event or if you don’t have a team yet and want to team up then please stay tuned for more details!

Also, please tell your friends about this! It’s going to be great!

10 reasons to come to the Blitzweekend

January 30th, 2008

From the Blitzweekend blog:

Blitzweekend is scheduled this spring (March 1st and 2nd) in Montreal, Canada. We expect it to be a very exciting and innovative event. Developers, designers and entrepreneurs are invited, in the spirit of StartupWeekend and rails rumble, to team up and build a product in just 48 hours.

Why should you be there?

1. For innovation

We will have geeks, gurus and entrepreneurs eager to work on latest technologies and try to come up with new software, algorithm, and designs of their own. Cool? You bet!

2. For the challenge

Do you have what it takes to design, build and deploy in 48 hours? Can you quickly solve technical problems? What about team dynamics? This is most certainly not an easy feat, and you will need to deliver your best and bring your best tricks. Excited yet?

3. For the experts

Each team will have “joker cards”, allowing them to call an expert in technology, design, marketing, business plan, finance, interface design etc. Do you feel that the challenges are overwhelming? Just raise the joker card, and you’ll get expert advice, allowing you to go forward in no time.

4. It’s an unconference

We won’t select attendees. We won’t ask for your resumes, your past experience or diplomas. Instead, we view each attendee as a co-organizer, bringing his or her own experience and skills and making blitzweekend the best event ever. Did we mention it’s free?

5. To learn

Blitzweekend will be an ideal opportunity to try out technologies and frameworks you never had time to try out previously. We will also be planning keynotes during the event, given by select experts and professionals.

6. To connect

Needless to say you will work, meet, and mingle with the most talented people in design, programming and in business. This, in itself, is worth the trip. If you are looking for co-founders, for a project or if you are hiring gurus for your startup, this is most certainly the event to be at!

7. Launch pad for you startup

The most promising teams who want to take their project to the next level and start a company will have access to resources such as venture capitalists, angel investors and business consultants. Got a good idea? Prove it!

8. Because it’s the future

Do you think people can’t build something in 48 hours? We don’t think so. Think rapid development frameworks like Ruby on Rails, Django, Merb and so on. Leaders like Facebook, Netvibes, Apple or Google released APIs that allow third-party developers to quickly develop an application on their platform. We think that it’s just the beginning, and we will see in the near future extremely rapid and agile tools allowing developers to launch applications in just a few days, if not hours. Come explore this world with us!

9. For the freedom

We will provide facilities, rooms, wireless access and food during the event. There are no rules on the projects themselves, apart that they should be in technology and they should be innovative. You can choose to either experiment or make stuff. If you want, you can write a business plan and create your own startup! It’s your choice!

10. For the fun

Yes, fun is they keyword here. If you go through the official website, you will see that it’s designed to be a game where teams compete to make something in a pre-determined amount of time. Attendees will get to vote on the most promising project at the end. We will even have a fun prize for the winning team.

So if you are in Montreal or planning to visit the city on March 1st and 2nd, then blitzweekend is a must attend event. For those of you who are interested, you can register on www.blitzweekend.com (it’s a wiki, so you can simply add your name)

A big sponsor for BlitzWeekend

January 29th, 2008

iNovia was kind enough to work with BlitzWeekend in order to make the event happen. You might not know but BlitzWeekend’s success really comes from them as they worked very hard with two different organisations to look for a very large space to accommodate 100+ people for 2 days. Let me tell you that it wasn’t easy and without iNovia, the event would not have occurred on time.

iNovia is recently well know for investing 2 million dollars in StandoutJobs so the BlitzWeekend committee is very excited to have them on board.

Just as a reminder for people who don’t know what BlitzWeekend is: it is going to be an event where teams will work on a project. Projects can be web-based applications, desktop software, widgets, mobile apps, games, hardware etc. This is however a very limited list and we welcome teams with fresh ideas. If you solve a current problem, if your idea is innovative, if it involves building new tools, then it’s probably a right fit for Blitzweekend.

Please pre-register ASAP as space is limited.

BlitzWeekend is official - March 1st + 2nd 2008!

January 22nd, 2008

Did I just say exciting week? Well as you may or may not know, BlitzWeekend is really official now! Thanks to iNovia and Universite de Sherbrooke, we have amazing rooms for the event. The building is very modern, wifi-ready and right next to the subway station. There is also parking available around the building. Heri from MontrealTechWatch, one of the committee members,  is also covering this great news!

BlitzWeekend will be an exciting event taking place on March 1st and 2nd 2008. Other than iNovia and Universite de Sherbrooke’s support, we already have Guru as an official sponsor. They will provide plenty of energy drinks to keep the competition, well, alive and kicking.

So if you don’t have a team yet, don’t despair. You can visit BlitzMaker and register as a designer, programmer or entrepreneur. People are encouraged to form teams ahead of time but we’ll provide guidance if you don’t have a team. Solo teams are welcomed but let’s be honest, time is limited and there will be a lot to do. If you can really start a business on your own in 48h then I’d like to hear from you :)

Please talk to your friends about this event. Post on your blog if you have one as we’re trying to spread the word.

BlitzWeekend is alive!

November 7th, 2007

As mentioned on MontrealTechWatch, BlitzWeekend is officially open for business! What is BlitzWeekend? Well in simple words, it’s a competition where teams build a product in 48h. Yes, over a weekend! This event is based on very successful events (mainly Startup Weekend – which originated from Boulder Colorado) however we slightly modified the basis of it in order to have a better event.

So who can come? You! All you need to do is setup a team before the actual day. If you have no team, fear not my friend as we’ll help you team up with other fellow developers, designers or business people who are “team-less” just like you.

You can come up with an idea beforehand however; working on it in advanced would be considered very un-cool. It’s ok to think about it a little bit but please be considerate of others who will truly start working on Saturday morning. It’s a friendly competition after all..!

We expect a business panel who will vote on the best idea. You will be invited to vote as well on the technical, design and business side of each project.

This will be an intense but very fun event and I invite you to join and talk to everyone you know about it. Attendance will be limited (due to room size restrictions) so please apply ASAP in order to confirm your spot! Come one, come all
